I don't know why Max didn't play but I can speculate: his shoulder still isn't strong enough to take faceoffs. So, the Pens certainly don't want him fighting which would risk reinjuring the shoulder. And I would not put it by Carcillo to go after Max. BTW, what is it with Carcillo...
